JOB DESCRIPTION: Assistant Teachers support the educational program and provide assistance to their assigned teachers and students by working with individual students or small groups and serving as substitute teachers, in addition to other support tasks within and outside of the classroom.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain a high degree of ethics and professionalism.
- Executes whole group and small group instructional activities with students
- Assists in the social development of students
- Implements behavior management strategies designed by teachers and administration
- Administers redirection and consequences per the school’s positive behavior support plan
- Ability and willingness to substitute teach on an as-needed basis
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information
- Delivers high-quality intervention lessons to targeted students
- Assists in the administration of school-wide benchmarks and state assessments
- Supervises and guides students to adhere to the school’s safety guidelines and proactively minimizes accidents
- Builds relationships with students, staff, and parents
- Follows the direction and guidance of teachers
- Meal Program: Supervision includes playground supervision and/or meal (breakfast, lunch, and potentially supper) supervision and distribution support, all of which could occur before school, during recess, lunch, or after school, depending on the position's hours.
- Note-Assistant Teachers might also work during after-school hours and will be in charge of working with groups of students during the after-school program
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required; Passage of the CBEST exam (or equivalency) and commitment to obtain a 30-day substitute credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing immediately upon hire.
- Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with staff, students, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately.
- Ability to recognize areas of concern relating to student issues. Solutions-oriented.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrated ability in conflict resolution.
- Possesses a growth mindset and a love of learning.
- Bilingual Spanish is preferred (not required)
- Effective instructional strategies and practices.
- Effective engagement and management techniques.
ASSISTANT TEACHER SUPPORTS:
- Arts in Action supports Assistant Teachers with obtaining their sub credential and can also support an Assistant Teacher becoming a credentialed teacher (Tuition funding, funding for applications, resources, and support with navigating requirements and next steps)
WAGE AND BENEFITS: This is a full-time, 10-month hourly position for the academic year with the option of summer work. The position is intended for candidates with a BA and the ability to obtain a substitute teaching credential. The hourly starting wage for candidates with a BA and the ability to obtain a substitute teaching credential is $21.00. Pay starts at a higher rate based on experience and the number of educational units/degrees. The full Assistant Teacher pay range is $17.50 - $28.00 an hour based on educational units, lead AT criteria, BAs, and possession or ability to obtain a 30-day substitute teaching credential.
